Things I’ve Learnt from Doing Markets

Tips, takeaways, and a few surprises from selling IRL

One of the most exciting parts of running Sorrell Jewels has been taking part in markets and pop-up events — from the iconic Selfridges to the vibrant Battersea Power Station. Since my very first market back in 2021, these in-person experiences have played a huge role in growing my brand, building community, and honestly, teaching me a lot.

Here are some of the key things I’ve learnt along the way:

Real-life events bring your brand to life

Markets are an amazing opportunity to physically show people what Sorrell Jewels is all about. They allow me to communicate my style and brand identity in a tangible way — from the layout of the stall to the little details that make it feel so Sorrell. Seeing my aesthetic come together IRL has been such a powerful reminder of how far the brand has come.

Jewellery is meant to be tried on

There’s something special about seeing someone try on a piece and instantly fall in love. For a lot of people, especially with vintage or one-off items, being able to touch, try, and connect with a piece in person makes all the difference.

You get real-time feedback

Markets are a goldmine when it comes to understanding what customers are drawn to. Watching people gravitate towards certain pieces helps me learn which styles stand out, what people are looking for, and what resonates with my audience.

Confidence comes with practice

Setting up my first stall felt terrifying, but now I feel proud and excited to show off the brand. Every market helps build my confidence — not just as a small business owner, but as the face of Sorrell Jewels.

It’s all about connection

The best part? The people. Markets have allowed me to meet the most amazing customers — some of whom now come back time and again to add to their collection. Watching someone’s personal treasure trove of vintage jewellery grow is such a privilege.

And it’s not just about customers — I’ve met some incredible fellow stallholders and small business owners too. The support within the community is something I didn’t expect, and many of my closest friendships have started behind a market stall.

Whether it’s been refining my brand, connecting with the community, or just learning to trust my gut — markets have been one of the most rewarding parts of the Sorrell Jewels journey so far. And I can’t wait for what’s next.
